The Sacred Maya Tree

The “Ceiba” a Majestic, exuberant and almost divine tree you’d like to hug.

The Maya consider it to be a sacred tree, the axis of the world. It is believed that its branches support the heavens and its roots are the bridge that communicates the living to the underworld.

One of the oldest and closest to Holbox Island can be found at Solferino, a few kilometers from the port of Chiquilá.

La Ceiba -Yaxché in Mayan, is jealously guarded by the García Canul family, who throughout several generations have achieved to preserve this sacred tree as well as the around 40 species of orchids and bromeliads that exist in the area.

1050 years old and 40 meters high, it would take about 10 tourists holding hands in order to hug this thousand-year-old tree.
